K-K-K-Katie

It is now October, 2008 and Katie has complained that I haven't updated her page for TOOOO long. So, I'd like to document that she has completed her Masters Degree of Arts in Education from Western Carolina University. I think the degree is for Counseling Younguns. What a fine thing for a person to do with her life.

And the other huge happening is that she has committed to a relationship with her longtime best friend and roommate, Laura Elliot. She has so committed that she added Laura's last name to the one we gave her at birth. Her students, who are getting the BEST care possible because Katie is helping them, call her Ms. Elliot. I call her Katie, one of the great and sweetest people I've met.

Laura Elliot, by the way, is an excellent person as well. We have done many fun things with Katie and Laura which include an Alabama football game with tailgate activity , and a ceremony which they termed a wedding (although I, personally, am unable to call it that) which was held at a beautiful place named Hot Springs, N.C. and at which we had a great time and met a lot of wonderful people.

Katie was recently ill and they realized she needed an emergency appendectomy. It went as expected and she is fine, but I was unable to find a way to get there in time to be a comfort to Katie. Laura was out of town, but closer than me, so she was able and willing to get back to Asheville in time to be with Katie and the other friends who were with her when she went to the ER. I realized again what a good and dear friend Laura is to Katie, as well as her other friends in N.C.  I am thankful for the friends Katie has where she lives and I am especially thankful for Laura who I have come to like very much. She is a sweet and devoted friend to my daughter. This, along with her great personality, causes me to love Laura as much as I like her.

Earliest entry: When I began writing this she was in the mountains, on the Appalachian Trail, as a counselor and camp leader, with 8 girls and 2 other staff members. Since then, Katie has moved to work with a group called 'Eliada' who cares for children with troubled families. Troubled - as in abused, dependant, and neglected. She's got a lot of heart and she seems unafraid. We have gotten very close lately and I'm really enjoying it. She keeps saying things that open my mind and I learn stuff from her that I should already know.

HISTORY / COMMENTARY: Katie made a short CD a couple years ago, with a great musician named Patrick Former Boyfriend, for some of the people she loves, then she was in a group from Tuscaloosa named 'The Cowboy Angels' with whom she regularly played up there. Katie is 26 years old now and these recordings are from both groups while she was in school at THE University of Alabama where she graduated with some kind of laude degree in some kind of weird, progressive psychology. I'm proud of her for working hard at school but what I'm really proud of is the kind of person she is. She 's got a pretty voice too. She's getting better every time I hear her. She has a special voice after the style of Allison Krause and some of the classic folk or country singers but she also does 'Silent Night', acapella, like no one else. We just moved Katie to Asheville, N.C. and if somebody up there doesn't find out she can sing like she does, it will be a shame.

Philosophy of Ed: I tell my kids that musical talent is a gift that came free with just being born, so, if they don't share it ..... click to read
