HISTORY / COMMENTARY: I've written about David Jackson and about Jimbo Jones but this is the first opportunity to say something about Larry Hawkins. Larry tells me that he came to the Kove to hear the bands a million times and that Tommy Beavers was THE inspiration for him to become the better drummer that he became. He says that's why he was having so much fun with this band. Maybe so, and, for whatever reason, I'm glad he was so much fun because it rubbed off on the rest of us. On this stuff you can hear him in the background freely expressing himself when he caught one of us doing our best. That kind of thing is rare in bands because of competing egos but Larry would easily just holler out of enjoyment during some songs or when he thought there was an extra special performance. You can hear him laughing out loud and encouraging the rest of us and that's a big reason these CDs are so good. Also, he's just a really good drummer and he picked up vocals easily enough for it not to be a problem for Jimbo and me after having sung with the other excellent singers we had been with. I wish he had sung more lead but this version of 'Dancey's Dream' shows off why I liked his singing.

We had a really good setup for recording at Deacon Blues and the room sounded very good, too. We only picked songs to do that we really loved, so it was hard to have a bad night. We really showcased Jimbo's voice and David's guitar playing with this band and we couldn't hardly go wrong like that. This is my favorite live performance and recording of my original song 'Next Time'. David tore up the guitar and Jimbo and I sang well together that night. Larry tells me that the David's guitar solo on 'Breakdown' (Tom Petty) is the perfect solo. Jimbo sings 'Have A Heart' (Bonnie Raitt) like he taught Bonnie how to.
